Seeing Eye to Eye
This is a creative nonfiction essay that I wrote for English 325, “Art of the Essay.” The assignment was to incorporate scientific and scholarly research into a personal narrative; I chose to write about strabismus, an eye-muscle coordination problem that I have, and the effects it has on my ability to make eye contact and to communicate.
Writing this essay helped me explore a physical problem that I’d just accepted as a part of my life and hadn’t thought about very much. It made me think about how my eyes have affected my communication style, and how my vision is one of the many possible reasons that I turned to writing in the first place.
